Sailor Moon merchandiseGreat Eastern Entertainment, a merchandising company, has listed four new products, all of them Sailor Moon merch! The products includes a notebook, a binder, a wall scroll, and a set of playing cards. No prices listed.

Does this mean a pending return of Sailor Moon to American shores? We know of Kodansha's plans to re-publish some Sailor Moon manga, but this stuff looks like the anime series.

Desperate Times Call For Life-Sized Zakus
Written by Brent
Monday, 11 July 2011 21:50

Zaku © Sunrise/BandaiMibu, Japan's "Toy Town," has seen better times. It needs something that will attract attention. Apparently, all the toy factories aren't enough to keep the economy moving.

What better way to bring in tourists than a life-sized mecha?

Undoubtedly inspired by the life-sized Gundam statue, a volunteer group has come together to revitalize Mibu by organizing the construction of a life-sized Zaku from original Mobile Suit Gundam.

What's particularly interesting about this story is that this is a volunteer project led by 30 "youths," who will have to raise the money themselves. They estimate it will take tens of millions of U.S. dollars to build, and will ask for donations, as well as sell limited-edition cups during a charity event for the Great Easter Japan Earthquake disaster.

Godspeed, friends. Godspeed.

Fafner Sequel Film Green-Lit, For Some Reason
Written by Brent
Monday, 11 July 2011 21:43

FafnerWord's been spreading about a new Fafner anime work, and sure enough, at a recent event, Fafner; Dead Aggressor: Heaven and Earth was announced. It'll be a film, shipping on September 21 on DVD and Blu-Ray.

I remember when Fafner was released in America, to a great chorus of crickets. Nobody seemed to have any interest in Fafner, and I never heard about any Japanese interest. But according to the ANN article, there's a stage play (?!?) that'll be returning in December for a new season with a new cast and "scaled-up production." Apparently somebody likes it.

Nice of them to announce it, what, 3 weeks before the con begins? Sorry, girls; if you're not already signed up, you ain't going to get a hotel room within 50 miles of the Baltimore Convention Center.

Toei Sees Oversees Licensing Increase 66% Next Year
Written by Brent
Thursday, 30 June 2011 06:58

Not quite sure how they figure this, but Toei has released a reSaint Seiyaport stating they expect to see their overseas (e.g., non-Japan) licensing increase 66% for the period from April 2011 to March 2012.

Most of the money will come from licensing character goods, including Saint Seiya t-shirts in China and One Piece and Precure toys and stationery in Europe.

Interesting that merchandise is getting all the attention, not DVD/Blu-Ray sales. Looks like the merch does sell.

And, wait, legitimate t-shirts are making money in China?
