New Underground Manga Mazine, in English PDF Print E-mail

Gen, volume 1Want to read some non-mainstream manga? The stuff that doesn't show up in Shonen Jump? Head over to GenManga.com, which has just launched the first issue of Gen, a manga magazine dedicated to underground Japanese manga, translated into English.

Even better? The first issue can be downloaded for free as a PDF.

That first issue contains four stories:

  1. Wolf, a strange sort of coming-of-age tale
  2. VS Aliens, a goofy high school romantic comedy
  3. KAMEN, a gritty shounen adventure set in feudal Japan
  4. Souls, an ethereal supernatural tale

KAMEN is clearly the first part of an ongoing story; the others appear to be standalone. They're all very Japanese.

Funimation Delays 14 Releases PDF Print E-mail

Robert's Anime Corner Store has announced that Funimation's delayed 14 releases across 10 titles, including Sgt. Frog, Noir, FMA: Brotherood, Noir, Soul Eater, Spice and Wolf, Eden of the East, Peacemaker Kurogane, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Dragon Ball Z. All the releases were for the July-to-September timeline, and all are being pushed back by 1 to 3 weeks.

This suggests a larger issue at Funimation, rather than just a problem with materials for one release.

Now, it could be anything, including technical problems with pressing discs. Interestingly, only DVDs and DVD/Blu-Ray combos are affected.

Himawari Licensed by Maiden Japan PDF Print E-mail

Himawari artHimawari has been licensed by Maiden Japan (get it? get it?), a new North American licensor who'll be working with Section23 to distribute it.

Until now, Maiden Japan had only licensed ecchi magical girl parody Papillon Rose and the serious mystery Glass Maiden. Somewhat schizophrenic catalog.

Good to see a slightly older show get licensed. We need these smaller companies to license these more obscure titles.

First Haruhi Novel Sells Over 1 Million Copies PDF Print E-mail

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novel coverThe original Haruhi novel, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, has now sold over 1 million copies, according to Japanese publisher Kadokawa Shoten. It's the first light novel to cross that threshold for an individual volume.

I must imagine those sales were helped dramatically by the anime series. I suspect light novel authors will now be much more anxious to encourage anime adaptations of their work, to drive sales of the novels.

Now, if we could just get more of those novels in English....

JManga Beta Signup Now Available PDF Print E-mail

From DragoArt.com

JManga just shot out an email announcing that the public can now sign up for their beta lottery. Go to jmanga.com/beta_signup to sign up, and you'll apparently be entered into a lottery to get into the beta. The site is, um, a little vague on details.

JManga plans to be an English-language digital manga site, which claims to have deals with 39 Japanese manga publishers. This could be a central part of the future of digital manga in English. We could really use an "official MangaFox."

I'm just impressed that they signed on that many publishers.

@ultimatemegax Right, that's the problem. The data's hard to find and make sense of.
@ultimatemegax I would LOVE to see that information. Where is it posted?
@ultimatemegax Well, there's not exactly tons of proof of the opposite, not in English.
@animeresearch Now that I look at it, XBox is *such* a dirty name.
