Everyone's opinion on darker than black

Hello everyone i have been wondering this for awhile, and what was peoples general reaction to darker than black. I honestly thought it was a masterpiece and still view it to be one of the best anime's I have seen. ( Including season 2 and the OVA) Am I crazy?

The first season is extremely solid and is one of my favorite action-based animes. It has a really intriguing universe and there's some nice, fairly social commentary to be had with the contractors that I didn't really pick up on until the end. The fights are very well animated (typical for Bones) and they're not drawn out - you actually get the impression that you have deadly, professional killers doing their best to take each other out. It had a very good main cast and some great side characters (November 11) and an interesting structure, with every set of episodes being two-parters. There were a few meh episodes but for the most part it worked. I thought they brought the main plot in a bit late and the ending was pretty underwhelming (a bit too reminiscent of Evangelion's TV ending).

The second season was also pretty good - it gets far too much flack from fans who didn't like Suou sharing the main character slot with Hei. I was really skeptical myself but she ended up being an interesting, believable character and gave a different perspective on Hei's character. I thought the action was even better this time around - Hei having to take on all these contractors sans-powers led to some really intense, creative scenes and just made him even more badass. I thought the ending was a complete mess, though. They tried to cram all the plot into the last two episodes (the curse of the 12-episode series) and it resulted in a barely-coherent, frustrating ending that didn't go into any of the show's outstanding mysteries and gave no closure for any of the characters. Which would be acceptable if they were planning on making another season; the director says they're not, but Bones said the same thing after the first season and the show simply sells too well to not keep it going, so I guess we'll see.

The OVA's did what the second season made a pretty big mistake in not doing at least a little more than it did - showing the viewer what happened to Hei and Yin between seasons and how they got into the situations we saw them in season 2. They did a great job showing the growing affection the two had each other (which was set up at the end of season 1) and seeing their relationship developed so nicely was the best part of the OVA's. Once again, the action scenes were all fantastic and probably the best of the franchise since the OVA-format allowed the creators to really go all out on them. They filled in all the gaps from season 2 (which retroactively became better since you actually kinda know what the hell is going on at the end now) and were a great series of episodes on their own right. I really feel like they should have made these BEFORE season 2.

So to answer your question, no, you're not THAT crazy. Despite its various shortcomings, DtB is one my favorite anime franchises. Hopefully Bones will go against their history and give it the good conclusion it deserves one of these days.

TL;DR 1st season = great, 2nd season = good but bad ending, OVAs=great

I definitely agree with exactly what you said. The fight scenes were very good I don't know who would disagree. Also I found the relationships between the characters very interesting. Like the Misaki and Hei, Mao and Hei also. The characters are very interesting and became even more interesting as the story continues. That's why I love season two so much because even thought the central plot wasn't about Hei but Suou, I was so captivated by the character development that Hei being there was just a bonus. But, it does have it's flaws. I haven't watched much of the English dub ( I didn't need it, The Japanese did a fantastic job)Please post your opinions people!

As was said before: The season one was good, episodic for the most part and brought closure to most of the arcs that it did have. Hei and Yin were well developed and the stage was set for the second season...The second season was short and confusing at the end. I only finally understood what happened from forums. I did not find the exploits of a child overly interesting, however, Hei's transformation in this series from depressed drunk to his old self was worth watching and added depth to his character (even if he spends most of the season smacking around a little girl who eventually develops a masochistic affection for him). The mood of the second season was different from the first. I still think that there is more material for a third season if ever they decide to make one. On the other hand: Suou is gone, Hei is probably dead, Yin is dead and Mao is...wherever he is. Amber may or may not be dead. They may be able to pull off a prequel to the first and second seasons that may answer all the unanswered questions.

Darker than Black is my favorite anime, with no competition. To be honest, I also had to look up what happened. But it was interesting to see everyone's different takes on what DID happen. And did Hei die at the end? And what about Yin? I thought they both survived...
If they make another season, sequel or prequel, that would be awesome!

Hei had to kill Yin to prevent the destruction of the world (? Izanagi met Izanami). The prophecy Amber made mentioned that a catastrophic event would occur. Suou's brother used his ability to create a copy of the earth (what they thought was a red moon) and together with the data collected by their supercomputer, they copied (cloned) every human being onto the 2nd earth. I think Hei's star had disappeared in the end (I could be wrong). Mao's missing in action, but the detective Kirihara is still alive and, perhaps, Amber so maybe they can make another season.

On second glance, I think that a lot of characters were sidelined in season one. For instance, I would have liked some further character development for the members of Amber's group The Evening Primrose. The way the last few episodes in season one were executed, it felt as if they were canon fodder. I also would have liked if the MI5 agents were more thoroughly fleshed out as they played a pretty major role in season one. I disliked that one of the remaining agents we were introduced to in season one was promptly killed off in season two.

If a season 3 does come out, I think I would prefer if it were a prequel. This way, characters who did not receive much attention in either seasons could be better developed (we would learn more about Hei's past with Amber and his sister Pai). The previous actions of Pai plays quite an enormous role in both seasons and yet we only catch a very brief glimpse of her. Mao is another character that I would like to see further developed.

On the other hand, if a season 3 continues the plot forward, that would be fine too. We were left with a cliffhanger of sorts at the end of the last episodes such as what (events that Amber predicted) would happen to the humans on the 1st earth.
