Kenji Miyazawa

Kenji Miyazawa is a super-famous poet in Japan, who's cropped up in anime a couple of times:

  • The movie Night on the Galactic Railroad is an adaptation of one of his books.

  • Spring & Chaos is a biographical OVA about Kenji's life. Except everyone is a talking animal.

  • Kenji's short story Gauche the Cellist was adapted into a short anime film in 1982 by Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli director of Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, and Only Yesterday.

Inspired by Drew's post about Takashi Murakami, I wonder how many anime fans have stumbled on Kenji Miyazawa before reading this post. Have you?

That's interesting. I had read "The Twin Stars" in a collection once before, but I found it a little flat and pointless. That was four or five years ago, so I might have a different reaction now. Also, I'm reading a translation, and poetry is notoriously difficult to translate.

I've wanted to read "Night On The Milky Way Train," though, since it's considered a bit deeper and more psychological.
