I want to read Rumiko Takahashi in English!

without comments

Rumiko Takahashi has had a huge effect on anime and manga; no less than three of her works have been hugely popular (Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, and InuYasha).

So, exactly how much of Rumiko Takahashi’s manga is available in English?

Surprisingly, almost all of it is. A few volumes of her earlier works are getting a little hard to find, but at worst you’d need to buy a cheap used copy.

InuYasha

InuYasha

Possibly Takahashi’s most popular work, and certainly her best-known recent one. I don’t think I need to tell you anything about InuYasha; if you haven’t stumbled across it before, you will soon.

Maison Ikkoku

Maison Ikkoku

No fantasy. No science fiction. Just a romantic comedy about a young man finding love, and a young woman finding it again.

Mermaid Saga

Mermaid Saga

I know essentially nothing about this.

One Pound Gospel

One Pound Gospel

Ditto.

Ranma 1/2

Ranma 1/2

Now this, I know. A seminal 1990′s series in both its manga and anime forms, Ranma added martial arts action to Takahashi’s romantic comedy formula, and boy did it work.

Rin-ne manga volume 1 cover

Rin-ne

Takahashi’s latest work, and one which I’m not thrilled by, but which is probably taking a while to find its feet. Girl crosses over to spirit realm, yadda yadda.

Rumic Theater

Rumic Theater

A selection of Takahashi’s short stories. Not much more to say about that.

Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura

Nearly forgotten by most otaku today, this series not only put Takahashi on the map; it helped define early otakudom. Otaku no Video is full of references to Urusei Yatsura, and UY‘s second film not only launched Mamoru Oshii’s career, it inspired several modern anime creators to get into the industry.

And it’s easy to see why: UY is full of broad characters, slapstick humor, and moe girls. Nothing wrong with that.
